After having experienced the coldest weather in gauteng ever (!!!) on saturday, we were all rather sceptical about whether there would even BE a hunt! It rained most of saturday and we all waited with baited breath to see what sunday morning would bring…
I woke up at 5:30 to pitch darkness, but no rain! yay!!
put on every item of winter clothing i owned and off we went – not expecting too much of a turnout!
Surprise! There was quite a big group today!! I would estimate close on 30-40 dogs…? Even a couple of new people – so brave to come out in this weather – well done guys!!
Our usual organisers were away this weekend… so we had a new team who stepped up to walk the lines, go over rules, blow the whistle… so, SPECIAL thanks to Gavin, Robert and Peter for standing in!!
the beagles seemed on a bit of a go-slow today, as very few of them finished the lines… BUT we did have a couple of the new dogs doing really well and Kujo finished a few times – today was his very first hunt!! Well done Kujo!
…
Kujo’s sister, Tammy, was more interested in running off on her own mission than sticking with the pack!
…
Before we even started our hunts… Roti decided to roll in some, ummm, rather unsavoury smelling stuff… which meant he had to run the lines naked! – Sheesh Trevor, you take one day off and look what happens to your dog… running around naked – sies!!
…
Naked boy!!
…
Roti’s brother, Poppadom telling him how he smells… (or was it how good…?)
oh… and there was THE CUTEST little puppy who came to watch the hunt today!! Her name is Daisy… she was so tired and cold after a while, her mommy bundled her up in her jacket and she fell fast asleep and had special cuddles!!
…
And little Penny had her customary nap on a tuft of grass…
…
By the way, Penny is still trying to grow into those ears!!
…
Basil and Enzo were having a competition to see who could look the saddest…
…
Humphrey’s pack with famous Barnaby in his stylin’ pajamas were there to support Ben… I personally think that Barnaby wore his PJ’s to try and detract from the fact that he’s not *actually* a beagle… shhhh – dont tell him we noticed ;p
…
Ben doing his best impression of “Chinese Eyes”
…
Two of our new recruits who got their mom and dad to brave the weather… Pavlov and Piccolo with their dad
…
Denver crying out for his one True Love… “Oscar, where are yoooooooooooou!!!!???”
…
Maya is back on form and running (and baying) like a crazy little beagle
…
Beagle Brothers, Harry & Oscar ready to rumble!
…
Lucy had to be restrained by her mom, as all she wanted to do was take off after her dad who was walking upfront laying the scent!!
…
and what would an update be without a photo of our very own mascot… Snoopy!!
ahhhroooo!
THANK YOU to everyone for braving the cold damp weather… hope all the new beagles had fun!!
REMEMBER to treat against ticks, fleas and worms (we do sell medication for all of these pests – pls enquire!!)
Our next hunt is on 9 MAY AT 7am… sign up here
We would love you guys to leave comments on our posts… whether you were there or not
let us know how you enjoy the hunt, our site, the super cute photos… we love hearing feedback from all you beagle huggers out there!!
Until next time, Happy beagling!
Hey Guys,
remember when some of us did the charity walk at Animals in Distress in Midrand in early October?
Well, there are pictures of some of us and our beagles in the latest edition of the Animals in Distress newsletter!
I was so excited when I opened up my post box over the weekend!
Unfortunately, the booklet is folded, and then I scanned it in, so, apologies for the not so great quality!
a really bad scan of the group of walking people…:
…
And the kind people at Animals in Distress sent me some other shots that she had on file… (click on the pics to view a larger image!)
Hey Everyone…
our last Walkhaven day for the year will be on Sunday 20 December at 2pm. I know some of you might be away… but we’ll have a run for you guys
What I would like to do, is ask everyone who comes to please bring something to donate to Animals in Distress from your beagle. I will drop off all the donations to the society, on behalf of the Beagles!
Donations can be:
This is not by any means compulsory, but it would be greatly appreciated and go a long way in helping animals who are not as fortunate as your beagle
If you would like to donate something, and cannot make it to Walkhaven on 20 Dec, please email me or see Animals in Distress’s website for more info.
I hope you can make it! – See you there!!
Sign up on Facebook, or on the beagle site.
- Happy Beagling,
Tanya
Another fun day at Walkhaven!
After a solid week of pouring rain and freezing cold, all the beagles were thrilled to be out and about, in the sun!
Not sure what the people at Walkhaven must think when every couple of weeks they are bombarded by a huge pack of crazy beagles!
I won’t even TRY and mention names of who was there…. because there were WAY too many beagles to remember them all – and a very large group of beagles I don’t know from the hunts, so I’m guessing they are from our Facebook Group
There was running, swimming, rolling, howling, barking and everything else that goes with being a beagle.
Oh – the highlight of our day was meeting Bailey! Who is FINALLY home after being lost for 3 weeks! She has become a household name to our group of beagle-huggers and is now quite the celebrity!
Here are some photos from the afternoon yesterday… (Thanks to Carmel – Snoopy’s Momma for the pics – I am very slack at getting pics!)
Oh, if you have some pics, Please upload them onto our BeagleTalk Forum – click HERE for the direct link to the thread.

The Top Ten Challenge was this morning…
as mentioned before the top ten beagles were:
Jesse, Jet, Leo, Matthew, Maya, Oscar, Poppadom, Roger, Roti and Sam.
Unfortunately Jesse did not join us, as he had a run in with a car during the week… We all send him well wishes to be back on his feet SOON!! So, there was just a top nine this morning.

--- FROM LEFT: Glen, Vicky & Lyn with Vicky's hounds Sam and Leo. Shaw with Matthew. Roelf with Maya. Trevor with Roti. Dilene with Poppadom. Tanya and Peter with Oscar. Claire with Jet. Raymond with Roger. ---
———–
The scent was laid by motorbike (about 7km long) and the nine beagles were taken to the starting point, scented and released. We had a pretty good view of the line from our position back at the cars. Leo took a very early lead with Matthew, Jet and Oscar not too far behind. Poppadom, Roti, Roger, Sam and Maya brought up the rear.
About three quarters of the way, the beagles encountered a group of about 5 guys walking through the mountains. The more experienced beagles didn’t pay any attention to the people, and carried on with their race. The younger dogs, however, stopped and barked and howled at the group… Unfortunately this threw the younger dogs off a bit
We were eagerly watching the dogs on the line, and waiting for them to start coming in…
LEO did Vicky proud for the umpteenth time, and came in waaaaaaay ahead of everyone else! Leo is 10 years old and is still super fit and a fantastic hunting hound! Well, well done boy!!
———–
In second place was ROGER! He came in, tongue hanging and looking ever so proud of himself! I think Raymond almost did a somersault at the sight of his boy
In third place was little JET! All of 15 months old! Fantastic job boy! Claire was very proud of her little boy when he came running over the finish line!
Fourth place was old MATTHEW who is very nearly 10 years old as well. He has been in the Top Ten for a few years now, but hasn’t finished one in a while. Shaw was also very very proud of his boy for doing such a great job.
A little while later, young SAM (Leo’s grandson) came in with a big beaglish smile on his handsome face.
Unfortunately, the other 4 beagles did not manage to complete the line (but all came back us without any problems, or anyone getting lost). So, even though they did not place, a big congratulations to: POPPADOM, ROTI, OSCAR and the rose among the thorns, young MAYA. Even though they didn’t finish, we are very proud of all of them… And JESSE too!
We have had over 100 beagles come through this season, so, being in the Top Ten is a real honour!
After the challenge, we feasted on a wonderful breakfast provided by Jane – who has done a great job at organising the events this season.
———–
There were also some beagles at the hunt to cheer on the Top Ten/Nine. Thanks to these guys for joining us, and supporting the top ten/nine for the morning: Snoopy, Bella, Purdy, Pippen, Rebel, Ninja & Zena (cheering for their little brother Jet), Harry (cheering for his little bro, Oscar), Little Kitana (who is related to Roger) and Meisie.
The Top Ten beagles for 2009 have been announced!
Congratulations to all ten of them! – I would like to mention that of the Ten, Maya is the only female who made it into the top! Well done girl!!
The Top Ten challenge is this Sunday, 20 September at 7:30am (Click here for details)
Please feel free to leave the beagles a good luck message in the “comments” section below the post! Let us know who you think (or want!) to win!! ![]()
…
We had our last hunt this morning.
Even though it was our last meeting, we still had new people join us, which is always great! There were about 35 to 40 beagles today. It was very hot out there! The beagles struggle quite a lot in the heat. Luckily the lines weren’t too long though. Lots and lots of beagles finished the lines, and no-one went off on their own mission again! It was great. I even heard Lucy finished a line for the first time today – well done girl!
Looking back over the 2009 season, it is so encouraging to see the dogs who started out as “newbies” earlier in the year are now running the lines like pro’s! The parents of 2009-first-time-hunters Denver, Basil, Ace, Jet and Maya should all be extremely proud of their hounds who have done incredibly well this season and have fitted into the group wonderfully and are now really part of the furniture – so to speak. The other new guys who have become regulars have also done really well – for lack of time and space (and for fear of leaving out a name or two) I won’t mention everyone by name…! – but you know who you are, and should be proud!
The guys who joined us later in the season, and are still catching on are showing great potential too – next year will be your time to shine!
It’s always a bit sad at the last hunt for the season… we have such great fun with our hounds throughout the year. I know I miss it in Summer time!
Next Sunday, at 7:30, is the Top Ten challenge. Anyone is welcome to come and watch – with leashed beagles, of course! The line for the Top Ten is about 6km long… and there is only one line – not 5 x 1km lines like we normally have.
After the hunt we’ll have a breakfast again (R20 per person, please email me if you want to stay for breakfast!)
** Watch this space for: **
We are having a social get together after the hunt on Sunday. It’s a relaxed fun morning to get to know other people and beagles in our group. Have a bite to eat, have a chat, watch the beagles play.
We will be supplying the food, for R20 per person. It will either be boerewors rolls, or croissants etc… depending on the number of people we need to cater for.
*** If you would like to come to the breakfast after the hunt, please EMAIL ME WITH NUMBERS to we can cater accordingly. ***
The hunt starts at 8am, and we will eat after that (about 11-ish)… you can book your beagles in for the hunt HERE (note this is the hunt part of the morning only, not the breakfast part
)
See you then!
Happy beagling,
Tanya
